The Review: Potion Permit is an adorable indie game by Studio BrewCraft, published by MassHive Media about a whimsical journey into the world of alchemy. You begin your journey into Moonbury as a budding Alchemist from the big city that once wronged this town. You need to grow your skills as an alchemist, while learning about the town and gaining their trust; you do this by opening up a clinic, diagnosing and healing the towns folks and perhaps even find love – and yes, you CAN pet the dog!

The game’s charming characters, vibrant environments, and well crafted animations create an inviting atmosphere that oozes old world charm. The attention to detail is evident in every corner of the game, from the whimsical shop fronts to the lush meadows, creating an immersive experience that feels like a cozy embrace for your eyes!

Potion Permit distinguishes itself from other alchemy-themed games by taking a fresh and unique approach to the craft. Instead of simply following predefined recipes, you have the freedom to experiment and discover new combinations. This game cleverly encourages you to explore and take risks, resulting in moments of excitement and discovery. The alchemical system is intuitive yet deep, striking a perfect balance for both casual gamers and alchemy fans.

Have engaging conversations, go on charming dates and form some attachment with a variety of Moonbury’s inhabitants. The dating mechanic adds some depth to the game. I will say, I was disappointed with the lack of availability to date who I really wanted to, but it’s relatable to real life – we can’t always get who we want!

While Potion Permit does well in many areas, its farming mechanics can feel repetitive after a while. Running around with the same hack/slash and gather routine was a bit ‘eh’ for me. Although the farming aspect contributes to the alchemical process, it would have been wonderful to see more dynamic and creativity for this aspect of the game.

You have the ability to teleport to various locations in an instant. While this feature might sound appealing at first, it somewhat undermines the sense of exploration and immersion in the game world. The convenience of teleporting reduces the need to travel around on foot, which ultimately diminishes the joy of discovering hidden nooks and sights.

All in all, I love this game. Its innovative and unique approach to this game genre is refreshing and enjoyable while maintaining a lot of the same aspects that I love from other farming simulator styled RPGs. I do wish I could’ve dated some other folks but it wasn’t a huge deterrent to the game and while adding another layer to the story it wasn’t pivotal in whether I enjoyed the game or not. As a huge lover of Stardew Valley style games, there are some definite aspects of Potion Permit that scratch that itch but the developers added more to keep it fresh and entertaining!

Potion Permit is available on Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch and Steam!

Pros:
– Innovative approach
– Beautiful graphic and animation style
– Updates ongoing
– Controller support
– You can pet the dog!

Cons:
– Repetitive grinding/gathering
– Not all NPC’s are dateable
– Fast-travel options too early
– No tutorial
